Egypt's Airports: Which One Do You Need?
A quick guide to Egypt's main airports — Cairo, Sphinx, Hurghada, Sharm El Sheikh, Luxor, Aswan, Marsa Alam and El Alamein — and which one matches your trip.
Egypt has several major international airports, and picking the right one for your itinerary can save hours of ground transport. Here's a quick overview of the main ones.
Cairo International Airport (CAI) is the country's main long-haul hub. Sphinx International Airport (SPX) sits much closer to Giza, the Pyramids and the Grand Egyptian Museum. For the Red Sea coast, Hurghada (HRG), Sharm El Sheikh (SSH) and Marsa Alam (RMF) cover different stretches of coastline. For the Nile Valley, Luxor (LXR) and Aswan (ASW) serve the temples and cruise routes, while El Alamein (DBB) covers the North Coast in summer.
If your trip is mainly about the Pyramids and Cairo sightseeing, Sphinx or Cairo International will usually be your arrival point. If you're headed straight to a Red Sea resort or a Nile cruise, check which of the regional airports is actually closest to your hotel before booking flights.
As with most Egyptian airports, it's worth arriving at least 3 hours before an international departure and around 2 hours before a domestic one, since security screening and passport control can take longer at busier times.
Whichever Egyptian airport you're flying into, Sphinx Airport runs licensed, fixed-price transfers with English-speaking drivers, 24/7, across Cairo, Giza, Sharm El-Sheikh, Hurghada, Luxor and Aswan. Message us on WhatsApp and we'll confirm your pickup in minutes.
